Should You Text Him First or Wait? "When to Text a Guy"

Five guys, ages 20 — 30, opened up about what goes through their minds before they hit send. Our panel of eligible male millennials: Names have been changed. David, 20 Braden, 20 Cameron, 23 Ben, 27 Nate, Four out of five of the guys said yes, there are rules to texting. A lot of these rules are generated by society and pop culture, and dictate how we converse with one another. I think these rules are also reflective of the relationship you have with someone.

The argument goes: If he really liked me, he'd call me, not text. The truth is: you don't have any idea what it means to him or her to text you in the early stages of getting to know each other. Release your assumptions - maybe texting is something you reserve for people who are a low priority for you, but that isn't the case for everyone.

If you've only been on between zero to five dates with someone, you probably don't know them well enough to know the emotional significance of texting to them. I text my mother way more often than I call her, and that doesn't mean I don't love my mom, a lot. To me, it means I prefer texting as a mode of quick and easy communication. I generally assume that other people would prefer text as well.

When I'm wrong, I'm happy to adjust accordingly!

Aug 29, - When I'm distracted by a podcast, I text like a gruff, under-bridge troll. of what a person is like when you start dating, especially now that we all meet by eye emojis, they might be super into you, but just not super into emojis. As someone who has sent the text "dope" to a possible boo thang in the past.

If you prefer talking on the phone to texting, that's cool. Just be sure to communicate that to your love interest. Which brings me to my second tip If you really hate texting, or perhaps you spend a lot of time driving in your car and therefore you rightly aren't able to text, say so!

Half of the art of relationships is communicating your wants and needs. Treat this as an exercise in learning each other's preferences and communication styles. But feel free to call me or I can call you later. If someone really wants to communicate with you, they will find a way to do that effectively. And for those who are just looking for a text buddy these people exist!

Just be sure to remember that relationships require compromise. The person texting you might have a good reason for needing to do so - or they might simply have a strong preference for that mode of communication.

It can't be your way or the highway all of the time, so be prepared to meet him or her halfway. A common complaint I hear is from singles who hate receiving last minute texts asking to hang out. I get it - I am a fan of spontaneity, but if you're always being treated like an afterthought or a Plan B, you just might be.

If you are making yourself available to someone who only contacts you at the last minute, you are condoning their behavior, no matter how much you complain about it! If you want to be asked out on a real, planned-in-advance date, then hold out for the people who will do just that.

Also remember that this scenario is another opportunity to communicate your needs. Not regarding dating anyway. An unspoken rule.

Or at least a guideline. Frankly, they feel like lame excuses. To be clear, I am not talking about paragraphs. Or sonnets. Or poems. Or declarations of love. Or endless flattery.

The Rules Of Texting (Explained By Guys)

Nor am I saying that you should be texting each other constantly. And then you can send a text or two that tells me what you have been up to, how work is, what exciting or inane thing is going on in your life. You might throw a compliment my way only if you mean it.

I might toss something flirty back at you. Good grief. Texting can be fun with the right partner! I just did this earlier this week. I was gracious, kind, and direct. Then I can choose if that arrangement is going to work for me. As long as I ask them out, send texts, and make plans, they will show up or respond. But there is zero initiation on their part. Sadly, so far my results have mostly gone one way: Nope.

They just disappear. But I will keep trying to find someone who is interested in meeting me half way and being an equal. Also, try to avoid bombarding him with a ton of messages. Remember that you guys are not serious yet and have just been on one date.

If this guy is an ex of yours, then it makes sense that you are not sure whether or not you should be texting him at all. The answer to your question depends on how things ended previously with the two of you. Have you been in contact with each other since then? First of all, did things end on good terms or did they end badly with this guy? If the relationship ended badly, then you should examine why you even want to talk to him.

Is the reason you want to text him because you want to try to win him back? If you do want him back, then you can let him know, but do not expect him to necessarily say that he wants you back too. If he is over you then you will need to respect his feelings and move on. What if you want to text your ex just to make him feel bad? If things ended poorly with him, then maybe you still have some really bad feelings about the relationship and how it ended. Texting your ex just for this reason might be pointless.

Why bring up bad feelings again with your ex and risk getting yourself upset all over again? Instead of stirring things up with him, try to lean on positive people in your life like family and friends for the support that you need to get over this breakup. Do you have some questions to ask him about the relationship or are have you been trying to figure out how things went wrong? If so, then feel free to text him to ask about it. Just prepare yourself for the possibility that he might have some harsh truths for you if he does answer these questions for you. Or he might ignore you or he might tell you that he does not want to talk about it.

Whatever he does say, just remember to respect his feelings and his point of view on how things ended. But after that conversation with him has ended, allow yourself to close the book on this old chapter in your life and try to move on from it. Maybe you need to let your feelings out lately and you have been wondering if you can vent them to this guy.
